Alex Torres and the First Protective Pitching Cap in MLB

Alex Torres became the first pitcher to wear an approved protective cap in a Major League Baseball game on June 21, 2014. He entered in the eighth inning for the San Diego Padres against the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to Guinness World Records.

The distinction is specific to MLB. It does not establish who first used protective headgear in every amateur, professional or international form of baseball.

The contemporary Pitcher’s Helmet account

A different design followed

Torres later debuted a lighter, two-piece design with the Mets in April 2015.

That was a subsequent equipment milestone. It should not replace June 21, 2014 as the date of his first MLB appearance in a protective cap.
